I found Transform Fitness, aka Training for Warriors DuPage, in February 2013. I was driving home when I saw the sign for “Group Fitness”, and “One-on-One Training”. At the time I was a member of a “big box” gym but in the 2 months I was signed up there, I had gone maybe 5 times. I would randomly go for a run with my husband here or there, but the idea of going more than a mile - and actually running the whole thing - was daunting. We had two young sons, Joshua who was 2 ½ at the time and Zachary who had just turned 1. Chris, my husband, always made time to work out. He had been doing karate since well before I met him, he would go for runs and even had some weight lifting stuff in the basement. I, on the other hand, had never been much for exercise, beyond going for a walk with the dog. After Josh was born I did join a mom/baby boot camp and found the classes to be fun and engaging but fairly quickly I was pregnant with Zach and stopped going. I did return after Zach was born but never felt the joy in working out.
After seeing the gym on that drive home, I called, talked to Josh (the owner) and went to my first class the next day. I didn’t know it then, but my life had just completely changed. I went to classes 2-3 days a week at first, loving that each class was so different than the one before. I would come home tired, sweaty and excited for the next one! Chris started to get interested as I told him the different workouts we would do, but I think it was really me talking about using the battle ropes that got him to start going! We would alternate nights for class, since someone had to watch the kids and technically the dog isn’t allowed to. But then he found the 5:30am class - and the rest is his story.
I continued going to the evening classes and Saturday morning. I was in a good routine of 3-4 times a week and felt super strong but I hadn’t lost any weight, I actually had gained some. In October of 2014 TFW had the very first 8 Week Challenge. We had to track all our food and commit to coming to the gym 4 times a week - and weighing in. I did it all, stuck to the plan EXACTLY as Josh told us to and week after week I lost a pound, maybe 2, maybe 0 but I never gained. The end of the challenge came and went but I didn’t consider myself done. I had only lost maybe 8 pounds - nowhere near my goal. I continued to follow the plan, even though the challenge had ended. I was now going to the gym 5-6 days a week and loving every minute of it. As a mom to two small boys, I never had time to myself at home. At the gym I was the only person I had to worry about. The gym was all about me.
I am proud to talk to people about the transformation I have undergone in the past almost 3 years. The me now is not the same as the me in 2013. Chris and I love to talk about what we did at the gym, what muscles are sore, a common phrase heard at our house is “oh my hammies!”, and of course we are teaching our boys about the importance of exercise and taking care of your body - you only get one!!
I never in a million years thought I would be the girl deadlifting, bench pressing and squatting. I also have completed a few 5Ks - running the whole thing! Training for Warriors has completely changed me, my confidence and my goals. We are so lucky to be a part of a community, or “Familia” as TFW calls it. We have made some great friends, and workout buddies that push us harder each day. TFW feels like home, comforting with the love and support you need to succeed, and just enough ass-kicking.
